Final cover

How I made my cover

When I had decided on the photograph I was going to use I opened it in photoshop  and then duplicated the layer, .

I started editing the picture on the duplicated layer, by clicking layer adjustments to brighten the picture, gave it a higher saturation level. I also sofened her skin to make it smooth and gave her redder hair to make her look more edgy.

After that I made a copy of that layer. With the copied layer, I cut out the background using the magic wand tool leaving just my model, allowing us to see the backround from the layer beneth.

To change the colour of the background I selected the bottom layer and went, layer, adjustments, colour balance. It then allowed to to experiment with different colours to find the one which worked best.

I then added my masthead. I created it on a text website saved it as a picture then placed it onto my cover,

I then had to cut on the white background that it was on so the blue background can come through. To make it look professional.

To make it look like a conventional music magazine i started to add boxes and shapes to put my coverlines and splash on.

To finish it off i added the text to my cover, i added a skyline, sell line main cover line, coverlines, barcode, webadress, date, issue number and a competition.

Photographic Influences

I have collected these photographs because they are inspiration for my own music magaizne. I will look at the poses, lighting and style within these images to help when it comes to creating a successful product of my own. Each of these photograph are unique and quirky and each have a bad girl/ rock chick look about them which is what i am picturing for my own style in the magazine.

Here are a selection of magazine covers that i think look really good and work well. I will use these covers to gain ideas and influences to create my own magazine.

Cast

Props and Location

These are examples and influences of the accessories and costume that I will put on my model.  This visualizes the ideas I have within my head for the meaning and look I would like the magazine to have.
In these selection of images there is pictures of the jewelry, for example nose rings, hoop earrings, and necklaces. As I am thinking of the best way to accessorize my model. I have also looked at hairstyles thinking about what will look good on my front cover, here I have collected images of girls with red hair, short hair and hair with the side shaved each following the the 'rock' and 'bad girl' style I want to feature on my magazine. I have then thought about props and costumes, starting with the guitar, the guitar will look good in my photographs and allow the model to achieve a range of poses, it will also reinforce the fact this is a music magazine. The costume I have decided on is not very girly and feminine making the model look more focused on the music than fashion, also making the model look more indie. Next I collected make up ideas, Searching for inspiration I found that dark/ red lips will look the best with natural, simple eye makeup this will add to the look that I am trying to achieve. Finally i started to look for posing inspiration.

Audience Media Pack

This is the audience profile for NME magazine. This media pack give reliable information and is trustworthy. I can tell this because the logo nme is used and it has been made by the producer of the magazine there for the information will be true and accurate. This reader profile tells the veiwer who reads the magazine, how many people do and what the readers think of it. The page is very professional and imformative, for example it gives website and contact detailsand holds very precise statistics. The page looks good too, with the magazines previous covers down the side helping to support the information given. The layout of the profile is neat, structured and easy to read. The best feature about the profile is the logo at the top. It is bold and bright, standing out from the page. It also make the media pack look similar to the covers. Allowing the audience to be familiar with what they are looking at.

LIIAR analysis of music magazines

This double page spread is from 'rolling stone'. It has a very relaxed and calm feeling about it as the page is not filled with lots off different features and fonts which makes the pages look very simple and effective.
The main feature of this article is the image that goes across both of the pages. The image is of Amy Winehouse laid on a bed. It is a set up photograph in a studio. The photo was taken with a final result in mind because her position, the lighting and setting was all thought out to work together in this double page spread. The image is in black and white, looking very natural and the room she is in is very light, looking like it is lit up by natural lighting. The room and bed are bare and plain to not distract us from Amy and the article.  The article itself is place over the main image, and is written in small, black text. To fit with the colour scheme and the calm feel to the double page spread. The layout is also very delicate and neat, with two small, even columns.
This Double page spread is aimed at adults both male and female. It will appeal to a male audience because she is wearing a revealing outfit and laid in a casual but suggestive position. Females will look up to her and will relate to her. She also looks very glamorous and stylish within the image. The main title/ masthead  of this double page spread looks like it has been written in ink which matches the content 'Amy's ink house'

This contents page is very bold, jam packed and structured. The layout is very organised as it is separated in different sections. For
example the banner across the top holding the mast head, the column down the right that includes page numbers. The main image at the top left. There are lots of different font types and sizes, this creates disorientation for the audience for a second but this then  tells our eyes where to look on the page.
The contents is very clear and informative as headings are used for example 'news' 'reviews' 'live' this is so that the audience can easily find what they are looking for.
The main image on the page has been taken from a live gig. This makes the audience feel like they are watching the performance and involved with the magazine.
The colour scheme, genre and content play a part in the target audience of this magazine contents. It is clear that its for indie/rock music lovers coming from the picture of a band playing their instruments and the NME logo itself. But the other features tell me that this specific contents page is aimed at males over females. For examples the colours used, red, white and black. These colours clash and are strong and manly together also representing the genre of the magazine.

LIIAR analysis of of my front page and how I achieved it

Media Language- I have included lots of different features in this front cover to try and get the best outcome, these features include:
*The mast head, I have chosen to place the mast head at the top of the page, in the colour yellow so that the eye of the reader goes straight to the mast head this then grabs the audience's attention and attracts them making them look at the rest of the cover. The word perform sets the theme for the cover and the magazine, readers can see this and then decide whether the magazine will interest them.
Under the masthead I placed '@Wyke' so that people know its a college magazine.
*The main image, The main image is a set up photograph took in a bare dance studio, the photo was originally a long shot, but to make the magazine look more effective and to fit the brief I zoomed the image in. I then edited the image to make it black and white, this gave a contemporary, modern feel. With a black and white image it will then be easier to get a colour scheme.
*Cover lines, I have place the 4 cover lines around the main image, the cover lines show what the magazine includes, I tried to make them exiting so that the audience wanted to read more on the stories. On one of my cover line I included images which I think made the more interesting and it will make the audience want to read the whole article. On another cover line I wanted to make the audience feel special, I did this by saying 'hidden secrets inside' this will make them feel that they are getting told some important information. I also wanted to use interaction in my cover lines I did this by putting 'you decide' this will allow the audience to get involved with the magazine.
*Sell line, I added a sell line to my front cover because I feel like they are a successful feature to include and it will help sell the magazine, my sell line 'the new dance craze' suggests that this is a popular, up to date dance magazine containing all the new stories and moves.
*Date, Bar code, issue number and website, following conventions of a magazine cover I saw that these features were all included so that people can buy the magazine and trust the magazine.
Audience- My magazine cover is aimed at dance students aged 16-20, both male and female students. However as dance is more of a female subject therefore it will be mainly girls buying the magazine. The colours used are neither masculine or feminine. I based the colours and images from my mood board and influences, this helped with the target audience too. I made sure that the cover lines would interest and attract my target audience as well as the over all look of the magazine, that's why I included things to do with dance and performing so that dance students would see the cover lines and want to read more.
Ideology- The ideas and meanings behind my magazine cover is to tell dance students at Wyke college why they should buy the magazine, the front page suggests it is a high quality, informative, reliable, entertaining magazine. The issue number tell the audience that the magazine is successful as there has been 14 issues and if it does well then it will make dance students want to buy it more. The price tells the audience that it is a good magazine as it's not that cheap so that it will high quality stories and articles. The date shows the magazine is up to date and reassures the reader that they are reading reliable articles. Also the cover lines show the target audience that the stories inside the magazine will be interesting and what they like to read. so they are informed and entertained at the same time.
Representation- The main image is of a girl in a dance pose, performing. Showing this magazine is for people that like to perform. When taking the photograph I told the model to look happy, like she enjoying herself and passionate on performing to create this exiting feeling about the magazine.  For example, saying if you love performing you'll love reading this magazine. Also she is looking at the camera so that it looks like she is looking at the audience, therefore attracting them. Using a normal dance student on the cover allows other dance students to relate to. As the photograph is a medium close up shot it allows the audience to see clearly the emotions in her face and the care she is putting into the position she's in.

I achieved this magazine cover using Photoshop. I stared out by planning and researching looking at the layout, influences, my target audience, the name and style of the magazine. When I decided and completed these stages I then took my photographs taking into consideration the brief and representation. I selected my favourite image and opened it in Photoshop. I then added the features like my mast head and cover lines to end up with my final product.

Mood boards and influences

This is the mood board I created based upon the type and target market of my magazine.  As the idea for my magazine is mainly about dance and is called 'perform' I found images that fit that theme and my ideas. Also, because my magazine is going to be aimed at girls aged 16-20 I made sure that the images I used would attract that age range and a female audience.

The magazine has great influence on me because I feel the cover is very successful. It is very simple but effective for example by, the way it only uses 3 colours. This front page draws me in and the cover stories leave me interested. Also the couple dancing on the front gives a contemporary, modern feel, which I would like to bring across in my front page, this cover also has a similar target to mine.

LIIAR analysis of 3 magazine covers

Audience- This magazine is clearly aimed at students aged around 16 to 20, However the audience of this cover is more towards girls than boy as the colours used are more feminine colours, for example the pink used on the girls t-shirt. Also looking at the main cover line 'NYC's freshman fashion' this is aimed at a female audience as girls will want to know what's in at college and what to wear. As this cover is set in a classroom and called college with a young girl on the front, I know its for the younger audience, backing up the age range that I stated, 16 to 20.
Language- The design of this cover and media language used has been well thought out, as it includes-
A masthead 'college', this mast head is bold at the top of the page, catching the eye and following conventions of a typical magazine cover.
The main image, of a medium shot girl, looking at the audience, in a set up photograph in a college, the picture is bright, fresh and young  looking. The cover also features the date, issue number and bar code, this allows people to buy the magazine and get general information on the magazine to have confidence in the magazine and knowing that its up to date. Finally cover lines and a main cover line, the cover lines are vital to a magazine cover because they tell people what is in the magazine, weather they want to buy it and if its something they are interested in or not.
Ideology- This magazine cover has different meaning and purposes, for example to attract and interest the audience to make them want to buy the magazine. The ideas and meanings behind this cover is to inform and entertain students, the look and the language included reassures students that college is not as bad as you may think. This front page gives me the impression the magazine wants to inform students on what college is like and the trends and 'what's cool' while at the same time entertaining them and giving them a calm, happy feeling on college. This fits in with the media language and the cool, bright, young feel to the cover.
Representation- The main model is portrayed in a certain way to attract the audience. This magazine uses the main image of a normal girl student so that people can relate, the girl on the cover also looks very happy like she is saying college is a great place to be, making the audience want to buy the magazine to find out more.

Language- This magazine cover is very busy and has a lot to take in therefore it includes lots of different elements, the first thing that catches my eye is the vibrant colours and the splash, that says 'secret panic' these are used to grab the readers attention, the magazine then goes on to use things like masthead, the masthead is white on top of lots of colour, also the images are place to overlap the masthead, this is because the magazine is well known, also because the cover has a lot to fit on things need to overlap. Also, the masthead on this front page is not paced at the top of the page, this leaves room for a header, the header is used to show the audience what is featured in the magazine like cover lines at the top of the page. And at the bottom, there is a footer, this contains popular stories from TV, they are responding to what the audience want to see and read. The cover also contains a plug line to help sell the magazine. However the front page does not use a main image this is different to most magazines.
The audience for this magazine is women aged around 16 to 40 I can tell this by the type of magazine this is, celebrity, life, fashion and TV, this interests a female audience. Also using Katie Price and Cheryl Cole on the front in large and small details on there stories about heartbreak and men, this attracts and interests women and shows they can relate and they would want to find out more what's going on with their love life.
Institution- This magazine is published by Bauer media group. This tells us that the magazine is high quality and trusted because this company is know worldwide and is very large and successful.
Ideology- The cover of the magazine make the audience think that the magazine contains lots of crazy, unbelievable stories because of how the cover is laid out and by what is on the cover. The Ideas and meanings behind the cover is to show a close look at celebrities life to attract and interest the audience. Also the bright colours and range of images used make the cover look good and professional. Meaning the rest of the magazine will be similar.
Representation- As the name of the magazine is closer it gives the impression of getting a detailed, open look into the stories and lives of well known celebrities. Also looking at the cover I get the impression that that magazine is going to be packed with celebrity gossip and popular TV star stories and entertainment.

Institution- the company that provides this magazine is the international data group.
Audience- this magazine looks like it is aimed at the male audience, aged from as young as 12 to 35. I think the age range is this wide because the character in the main image is aimed at the younger generation, however it will include games for the older men as it says on the main cover line, 'GTA top 20 missions' and it will most likely be the older men buying the magazine. I think it is aimed at men because of the media language used like masculine colours used e.g blues and reds, also as games are associated with men rather than women.
Media language- this magazine cover includes similar things to the others therefore following conventions, for example a mast head, cover lines, main image, skyline, offers, website ect, all working together to create a successful front page. The masthead 'gamepro' this will give the audience confidence making them think that the magazine is made by pros at games and this will attract them to cover.
The offers that are included is another great element to sell the magazine as if people are interested in the offers then they would buy the magazine.
Ideology- The ideas behind the page are to get the audience included and informed on the gaming world. Also to entertain, with the picture of 'Mario' saying man of the year, people may find that amusing if they are a fan of Mario.
Representation- the character is reaching out to the audience, showing the interaction just like a game. Making the audience feel involved and part of the magazine and games. This makes me think that the rest of the magazine will be getting the audience involved and be entertaining mirroring a game. Also the picture of Mario is placed on a blue background and there is a glow around the edge of him like he is in a spotlight, like he is this very important character which matches the quote '''man of the year.' Maybe suggesting that this magazine is very important to gamers.

Preliminary exercise: College magazine

Using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
